Fall Fashion: Just a little bit avant garde

11 Oct

That’s one term I never thought I’d consider using to describe Fall Fashion I like, let alone wear. But after yesterday, I’m a changed woman. SoHung Designs is a brand I discovered at the Madison Square Park market.  In the middle of this outdoor, “more of the same”  market with stall after stall of un-unique jewelry designers, scarf vendors, and kitschy toy creators, I found the SoHung Designs stall and was immediately dazzled by the fall fashion designs. The pieces are discernibly handmade; you can see they’re just short of totally refined. But this gives them a great deal of authenticity and makes you feel like you’ve got the only piece in existence. What I walked away with was appreciation for his ability to make the avant garde, the typically unwearable side of fashion, totally doable and, look really, really good.  Here are a few pieces I loved.

Houndstooth pattern wool coat with zipper details at the waist and a bustle-like train in the back.

Black wool kimono-style coat with zipper neckline

Voluminous tiered skirt and military-style jacket

Detailed creativity, eschewing the more common use for a tie - menswear ties reimagined into dresses.

Black jersey zipper dress - the zipper and bustle theme carried through to this piece
