Fashion Trends: More Metallics-Bags, Belts & Blazers

24 Nov

I’m still in love with metallics since the last time I was in love with metallics. A metallic sheen is a fantastical way to spread some fashion fierceness, make a bold statement, and stand out.  This time, let’s focus on bags, belts, and blazers.  Here is a selection of BB&B that I think are exceptionally versatile pieces to own.  Believe it or not, a metallic jacket can act as a neutral piece – it an be paired with any number of colors or prints because it’s a blank (albeit, shimmery) canvas. Likewise, metallic accessories liven up everyday solids, and transform a simple knit top from day to night faster than you can say, “Do these come in size 7?”.

Today’s Outfit: My Favorite Necklace

18 Nov
Sometimes, I’ll build an outfit around one specific item. Today, it was this necklace.  I bought this in Argentina when I was there this past March. I came back with loads of jewelry, and this piece is one of my favorites. So when I looked in my closet and saw all my hanging treasures this morning, I decided this was the sun around which all  other parts of my outfit must revolve. Also, I should note that everything I’m wearing today, with the exception of my boots, is under $50.  Sometimes, the Target tank is just as great (if not better) as the James Perse ($40+) or Three Dots ($40+)  version.

Fashion Inspiration: Build Around a Vest

10 Nov

I came across this Richard Chai Love Cap Sleeve Draped Vest ($345) as I was poking around on Barneys.com. I was (don’t laugh) captivated. The color is neutral so it is begging to be swapped in and out of a variety of outfits (really, it’s begging). The neckline is so chic with the high collar back and v-neck front.  The draping at the hemline forms a V that points upward, adding to the illusion of a small waist. And, the seam runs diagonally down the tummy-another slimming detail. This vest can go a couple ways (and it should for what it costs). Here are two that I love, but you can come up with more, I’m sure.

All About Town

A great look for daytime, wear this look on a casual Friday or spending an afternoon with friends (swap out the pumps for flats if you’re literally running all about town).   Topped off with comfy jeans and a gorgeous carry-all tote, you’ll be subtly stealing the show, wherever you are.

A Little Burst of Color

Keep everything simple, streamlined and then, real ninja-like, sneak up on ‘em with a bag that screams cheery playtime (really, it’s screaming).  A simple spandex/cotton dress is a perfect foundation layer, and the lace stockings work as an accessory. If you like, downplay the sexiness of the lace with boots that cover all but a just a tiny sliver of your legs.

Today’s Outfit: Who Loves an Animal Print?

5 Nov

Again, that’s me.  This top has everything I love in clothes – fluidity, a draped neckline, it’s silk, and it’s made for petites.  I feel very dressed up but comfortable. Since I was a little girl, I have really avoided tailored, restrictive clothes at all costs. I was rockin’ leggings all through childhood. Even as an adult, I don’t wear too many tailored garments. Instead, I look for clothes that are refined but still moveable, and don’t restrict me.  What I’m wearing today does it for me. What’s your ‘must have’ in clothes?

7 Plays on the Classic Pumps

1 Nov

For some reason, classic slip-on pumps are not comfortable and I don’t like the way they fit. For me, it’s more like slip-off and I feel like a little girl trying to walk in heels for the first time.  So when I look for pumps, I look for ones that cage in my foot, keep it in place, and make them effortless to wear. Here are a 7 excellent examples of the kind of pumps that work for me (including a couple pairs I tried on today at Nine West, but sadly, didn’t buy). Oh, and don’t be afraid of hosiery with a peep toe.  Just match the shoe color to the leg wear and you’re golden (unless you’re like me and like to sport bright tights with a black shoe). Fashion Trends: 5 Lovely Lace Tights

27 Oct

When it’s too cold to go bare-legged and too warm to don those thick tights or wool pants, what’s a good option for in-between? The answer is lacy tights.  A perfect, effortless accessory, lace patterns are borderline hypnotic when you stare long enough. But, beyond their psychological implications, they’re a very versatile (subtly sexy) option for leg wear.  Here are some lovely, lacy, leg-bearing options.

Hue Lace Tights, $18

Michael Stars, $48

Wolford Lace Garden Tights, $150

Jewelry: 3 Great Handmade Pieces

25 Oct

I attended the first ever New Jersey Fashion Week on 10/12. Aside from the actual fashion and people watching (the cast of Jerseylicious was in the house), there were some exquisite jewelry and talented jewelry-makers there. One in particular, Zaiken Jewelry really stood out.  Malak, the owner and designer is a gracious woman whose cultural richness is immediately apparent in her pieces.  Besides that, each piece and collection has meaning.  Here are some of my favorites.

Today’s Outfit: For a Rainy Day

19 Oct

When it rains, I think of wearing my wellies which go best over tights or leggings. I went for the latter. Here’s today’s outfit, my boots, and my coat.

Leggings by Lululemon, Sweater by H&M, Necklace from a designer market in Buenos Aires, and Boots from a store also in Argentina (but the name escapes me)

My beloved, wonderful boots with the perfect heel, the perfect toe, the perfect scrunchiness, the softest leather.

Fashion Jewelry: Alexis Bittar Cuffs

23 Sep

And do it with style. Today, I watched some friends drool over Alexis Bittar jewelry designs. For good reason, certainly. He (yes, it’s a ‘he’) has amazing jewelry that is unique, earthy, deeply colored, richly embellished, sumptuous and sexy (if jewelry can be so).  I too love Alexis Bittar. Right now, since I’m so all about bracelets (last year this time it was big, over-sized rings), I’ll spotlight a few and wait patiently for them to go on sample sale.

Gold Studded Hinge Cuff, $225. What a sophisticated way to play a rock star. Imagine this with a delicate black silk tunic or dress or beautiful blouse made of antique lace. What a great way to pair opposing styles in harmony.

Python Gold Gunmetal Hinge Bracelet, $325 . Regal and royal like it should rest on the delicate wrist of a queen, this beautiful cuff is a statement and that statement is: "I'm too damn cool for you so back up."

Jeweled Web Gunmetal Large Hinge Bracelet in sea blue, $525. Blue is the color of calm, so breathe in the zen with this peace. You'll be mesmerized by the combination of the shiny gunmetal against the rich blue. How beautiful with a white blouse and dark trousers or jeans? Very, very beautiful.

Gunmetal Sophia Hinge Bracelet in Dark Raspberry, $295. A deep purple split down the center with a thick rope of gunmetal reminds me of juicy grape JollyRancher candy. Just want to take a bite out of this beauty. Instead though, let it adorn your wrist and consider wearing deep purple nail polish and a light purple top or dress.

Well Suited

21 Feb

I was asked by my good friend Kristin to do a post on work attire.  Initially, I thought, “every post I do is work attire”.  But the more adult part of me knew that she meant traditional work attire, i.e. suits. I love suits, just not on me. I recently had a conversation with someone about men’s suits. When worn right by a man, a suit is charismatic, powerful; the sexiest most mouth-watering thing he can wear. And, on a woman, if the fit is right and the attitude is there, she says,  “I’m a bad ass, do not mess with me”.  While I personally hate wearing them I do still have an opinion about them.  There’s a right way and a wrong way to wear them and so I offer some quick tips:

Repeat after me: “no double breasted if you’ve got a rack”. If you close up your neckline and put not one, but two layers of fabric with buttons down the front of your body, you get what I call, the uniboob.  There goes your waist, here comes a straight jacket-like effect in navy blue. Double breasted is reserved for super slender women who need the illusion of extra volume. And for the rest who are moderately-to-well-endowed, think open v-neck, single or double button jackets.

Fit, fit, fit.  Suits do not come right off the rack perfectly fit for you. In fact, I can promise it doesn’t fit you. A suit is a complex construction that is built at the outset to be modified and tailored.  If you buy a suit and you think it fits, take it to a tailor anyway and ask her if she agrees. If you don’t get it tailored, you’ll risk looking like a little girl trying to play dress up or worse, a sausage near bursting out of its casing. When buying a suit, go to a department store where they have tailors on hand and the sales folks know their stuff.

Cuffs on pants are reserved, well, for no one really. Stay away from them. They cut your legs off at the ankle and make you look shorter. A cuff is nothing but a horizontal line and any horizontal line interrupts the long, lean vertical flow that offers the illusion of ‘tall’. Think a crease down the front (a faux vertical line), think a pant length that barely skims the floor in your highest heels, think cuffs-be-gone.

Patterned suits are a no-no, at least worn together. A really cool blazer that has a distinct pattern is unique when paired with denim. But putting plaid on plaid from top to bottom is overwhelming and yields more of a circus clown appeal than a smart professional.  If you buy or own a suit that has a prominent pattern, never wear it together.

Stick with basics, ladies.  You can’t go wrong with basic black, navy, dark gray, espresso brown or even a pin stripe. A bright purple or fire engine red suit just screams bad taste and is too much color for the crowd to take in.  Plus, a neutral gives versatility. You get longer wear and more mileage out of that navy blazer when you wear it over a white summer dress, use it to kick up your slouchy weekend jeans, or leverage it to elevate that T-shirt from lazy to Parisian chic.

Think outside a matched suit. Be playful. Mix the jacket with different bottoms or over dresses. Buy a cropped pants suit for different seasons. Wear your tailored pants with a cotton shirt and pretty scarf. Invest in a series of jackets – cropped length, three-quarter length sleeves, lapel detailsdifferent lengthsfabrics and patterns. You needn’t be confined to match Jacket A with Bottom B. As long as you have the components of the suit – the jacket and the tailored pants – you’ll look refined, current, and totally top-notch.

A few ideas…though I could go on for years.

Here is a classic, well-fitted, go-to black suit.  The jacket is tailored and shows off a waist (or creates it where there is none), the pants are flat front (no pleats, no funky pockets), and the cut is a slight boot cut which balances most figures for a most flattering silhouette.  Invest in this and the interchangeability is infinite. So if you’re experimental like I am, try some new things like a sheer, loose fitted blouse (don’t forget a cami underneath). Go for comfort with a basic v-neck and add a statement necklace.  Even better, keep the suit all black and transform yourself with some animal skin pumps or a pair in an unexpected color.

Here, a really nice example of a cropped pants spring/summer suit.  Instead of a basic button-down, offset the traditional lines with something super-feminine like a ruffle-front tank. Even more fun, is a glamorous and unexpected top like this striped sequin bit of genius. Wear nude pumps to keep the look subtle and clean or slip on some snappy, shiny flats for uber-mobility.

Now go. Get suited up.
